The historic heart of the town begins a bold new chapter as The Old Market Square steps into the spotlight.
The Old Market Square in recent years has been home to some of the best live music events in Warrington town centre, and now it will have its own identity that stays loyal to its proud heritage and celebrates 170 years at the heart of the local community.
Rather than launching something new, Golden Square is giving this well-loved civic space its own identity—Warrington’s oldest, newest venue—an open-air hub for live music, community festivals and cultural events.
“The Old Market Square has always been where Warrington gathers,” said Ian Cox, Centre Director at Golden Square. “By defining it as a venue in its own right, we’re celebrating everything it already is—historic, iconic, and ready for the future. We’re not changing it—we’re just giving its name an identity.”
Community At Its Core
Surrounded by independent bars, restaurants and the iconic Mad Hatter’s Tea Party sculpture, The Old Market Square brings a cultural glow to the town centre—swapping daytime bustle for night-time beats and driving footfall for local businesses.
About The Old Market Square
First erected in 1855 as part of an early regeneration of Warrington, The Old Market Square has hosted traders, festivals and civic celebrations for more than a century. Now re-imagined by Golden Square, it offers a 2,000 plus capacity open-air/covered venue equipped with professional staging, lighting and sound—while retaining its original Victorian ironwork and market-hall character.
In recent years, some huge names in music have played this unique venue, including the Happy Mondays, Cast, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Reverend and the Makers, Space, and The Lightning Seeds. It’s also been home to fan parks, Symphonic Ibiza, and the original stage for the Warrington Music Festival—the breeding ground for emerging music talent across the North West.
What’s Next?
Golden Square already has plans in place for 2025 that can be viewed on our events page and will announce a full programme of concerts, events and community festivals for 2026—cementing The Old Market Square as the key cultural meeting point in Warrington’s calendar.
In September, it will host one of its biggest events to date, with Kasabian’s original front man Tom Meighan headlining what promises to be a night to remember.
